Unit 3 focuses on the idea of derivatives. It is a brand new concept for you that expands the limits you learned last unit. There are many rules that allow us to take the Derivative of a variety of functions and equations and once you master them, you will be able to solve problems that could not be solved otherwise.
Each section below will have several instructional videos for each part, including examples and their solutions. After all parts are completed within a section, there will be a set of questions to be done and handed in. After all sections are completed, there will be a single summative assessment (unit exam) covering all material from this unit.
Unit Sections
a) What is a Derivative i. Connecting Derivatives to Limits ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions ii. Drawing the Derivative Function ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions
There will be example questions within each video which students will be asked to do and then they will be walked through the solutions together. After the subsections is done there will be a SINGLE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT that students will complete and then submit. A walkthrough solutions video will then be given to the students to self assess their work.
b) Derivatives Rules i. Power Rules ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions ii. Sum/difference Rules ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions iii. Product Rule⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions iv. Quotient Rule ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions v. Chain Rule ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions vi. Using a combination of rules ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions
There will be example questions within each video which students will be asked to do and then they will be walked through the solutions together. After each of the above sections is done there will be a FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT that students will complete and then submit. A walkthrough solutions video will then be given to the students to self assess their work. At the end of part iv, there will be a summative assessment covering all previous parts. At the end of part vi, there will be another summative assessment covering parts v and vi.
c) Other Derivatives i. Higher Derivatives ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions ii. Implicit Differentiation ⇒ Teaching Video with Embedded Questions
There will be example questions within each video which students will be asked to do and then they will be walked through the solutions together. After both sub sections are done there will be a SINGLE FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT that students will complete and then submit. A walkthrough solutions video will then be given to the students to self assess their work. After the formative assessment is completed, students will be directed to complete a summative assessment for this part.
d) DERIVATIVES - SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS
The Derivatives Unit will have 4 summative assessments. Three smaller assignments and 1 unit exam. These assessments will represent the entire grade for the Derivatives unit of this Math 31 course.
Once a student reaches the point in the Unit where the summative assessments are posted, they should be completed before the next sections are attempted.
Once all formative and minor summative assessments are completed, students will write the unit Summative assessment at a supervised site.
Students will have the opportunity to rewrite this Summative Assessment at any time BUT through instructor consultation and guidance, students will have to demonstrate evidence of new learning and preparedness.
